Cougars hold on to defeat MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, OhioTyler Reed continued his hot hitting, crushing his ninth home run of the season, while Francisco Ondina collected three hits and scored three runs to lead the Spring Arbor University baseball team to a 10-8 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Reed put Spring Arbor on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run bomb to center.
  • In the second inning, the Cougars scored four runs on five hits – highlighted by RBI doubles by Chris Triplett and Nick Harris.
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene cut into the deficit with five runs in the home half of the second.
  • After two scoreless innings, Spring Arbor pushed two runs across in the fifth. James Hall scored on a triple by Francisco Ondina. Ondina would also score on a wild pitch. MVNU responded, however, with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Cougars took advantage of three MVNU errors in the seventh, adding two big insurance runs. The home team fought back once again, scratching a run across in the bottom of the inning, but Nick Carroll worked his way out of the bases loaded jam with no further damage.
  • Brody Harris entered the game out of the bullpen in the ninth and nailed down his first career save.
  • Reed continued his assault on opposing pitching, going 2-for-6 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Ondina went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored. Three other Cougars recorded multiple hits, including Triplett, Harris and Alex Holley.
  • Andrew Wright picked up the win on the mound. Carroll pitched three innings of relief and allowed just one run with three strikeouts.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will open a three-game set against Marian University (20-17, 14-6 CL) in Indianapolis on Friday, Apr. 21. Game one of the series is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
