Baseball drops series finale to MVNU

Box Score

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – After a thrilling, walk-off win to cap Friday's doubleheader, the Spring Arbor University baseball team looked to secure the series win over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, but five late-inning runs allowed MVNU to escape with a 6-3 victory.

THE BASICS

SCORE: Spring Arbor 3, Mount Vernon Nazarene 6

LOCATION: Hank Burbridge Field | Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 13-14 (4-3 CL), Mount Vernon Nazarene 13-9 (2-2 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor's Sam Memmelaar was on the mound for the rubber match looking to secure the series win. The senior left-hander was cruising until the top of the eighth inning when MVNU's Jake Glover hit a pinch-hit, three-run home run to put the visitors on top.
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene's starting pitcher, Clint Conner, was just as good, going six innings, giving up eight hits, three runs, and four strikeouts. Gustavo Fuentes, the freshman, from Mexico City, Mexico, bridged the gap pitching 1.2 innings of hitless relief. Then, the left hander, Jacob Roe came on and got the last out in the eighth before slamming the door shut in the ninth.
  • The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning after an RBI single by Noah Brook, and added another run in the sixth on a suicide squeeze.
  • That was the way the score stayed until the eighth inning. Mount Vernon Nazarene's Brandt Miller started a two-out rally with a run scoring single. Two batters later, Glover delivered the go-ahead homer.
  • Spring Arbor left 10 runners on base in the game.
  • The Cougars had three different players that had two hits, including Francisco Ondina, Vincent Herschberger, and Peyton Harding.
  • Memmelaar went 7.2 innings, gave up eight hits, five runs (four earned), walked five, and struck out seven. Herschberger also logged 1.1 innings on the mound.
