Cougars sweep DH to complete series sweep over Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Spring Arbor University took both games of its Saturday doubleheader against rival Grace College, 10-2 and 10-1, to complete its second Crossroads League series sweep of the season. 

The Cougars received two outstanding pitching performances from Duncan Patterson and Sam Memmelaar while the offense gave them plenty of support erupting for 20 runs on 28 hits.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • An RBI double by Francisco Ondina got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. Two batters later, Evan Lorey would drive in Jack Driscoll, and Ondina would cross home plate on a wild pitch.
  • Already leading 4-0, Spring Arbor put the game out of reach with a six-run fifth inning. The Cougars opened the frame with four consecutive hits, including doubles from Chris Triplett, Driscoll and Vincent Herschberger. Kyle Harris would also deliver a pinch-hit, two-RBI double.
  • Triplett was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the way while each of the first four batters in the lineup scored twice.
  • Patterson tossed his fourth complete game of the season on his way to earning his fourth victory. The junior right-hander allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Triplett led off game two with a double to left field and would eventually score on a base hit by Ondina.
  • With Spring Arbor leading 3-0 in the seventh, Ondina doubled the lead with a three-run blast to right.
  • The Cougars would tack on four more runs in the ninth on RBI hits from Lorey, Jacob King and James Hall.
  • Ondina collected five hits in the game, including his second homer of the season, along with five RBI's. Lorey went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and King went 2-for-2.
  • Memmelaar recorded his team-best sixth victory of the season after pitching eight strong innings surrendering one run on five hits while fanning eight batters.

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will host Taylor University (34-11, 14-6 CL) on Tuesday, Apr. 24 at 3 p.m. and welcome the University of Saint Francis (11-28, 8-12 CL) to Hank Burbridge Field on Wednesday, Apr. 25 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
