Baseball stays hot in sweep of Saint Francis

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team exploded for 39 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Saint Francis on Wednesday afternoon at Hank Burbridge Field. The Cougars posted a 20-8 win in game one and a 19-12 victory in game two.

Since defeating NCAA Division I Toledo last week, the Cougars have won six of seven games with the only loss coming in extra innings to Taylor University.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spring Arbor scored the most runs in a single-game since putting 36 on Valley Forge during the 2012 season.
  • The two teams traded the lead four times through the first five innings.
  • Spring Arbor held a slim 9-8 lead after five before erupting for 11 runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Vincent Herschberger punctuated the 11-run inning with a three-run bomb – his team-leading fourth home run of the season.
  • Chris Triplett and Josiah Kitchen recorded three hits apiece while Triplett also scored four times. Jack Driscoll and Francisco Ondina also had a multi-hit game.
  • Zachariah Devon earned the win pitching five innings and striking out four batters. Evan Lorey closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Saint Francis struck first in game two with three runs in the top of the first inning.
  • The lead was short-lived however as Spring Arbor tallied 10 runs on nine hits in the second inning.
  • The Cougars would tack on two runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth to break the game wide open.
  • Three different Cougars collected three hits in the contest, including Driscoll, who also scored three times and drove in three runs, Jacob King and Peyton Harding. Making his first career start as a position player, Duncan Patterson went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI's and a run scored.
  • Andrew Manier earned the win on the mound and Kyle Harris tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will head to Marion, Indiana for a huge three-game series with first place Indiana Wesleyan University (32-16, 18-6 CL)beginning Friday, Apr. 27.

The Cougars currently sit in fourth place in the Crossroads League standings, just 3.5 games behind the league-leading Wildcats.
