Baseball claims series win over Rochester

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team wrapped up its fall season on Monday afternoon, splitting a pair of games with Rochester University. The Cougars dropped the first game of the twin bill, 7-3, but bounced back with a 7-6 victory in the nightcap.

Spring Arbor won three out of the four games against Rochester, including a doubleheader sweep on Friday, and finish the fall season with a 3-1 record.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • A grand slam by Rochester's Bruce Kudela capped a six-run second inning and gave the Warriors an early 7-0 lead.
  • Spring Arbor rallied late, scoring three times over the last two innings, but it would not be enough.
  • Brant Mast went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Glenn Miller and Vincent Herschberger also collected one RBI apiece.
  • Cade Kontny was terrific in his collegiate debut. The freshman pitcher worked 5.2 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just three hits while striking out two.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rochester grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Spring Arbor answered with five in the home half of the first. Jacob King delivered the big hit, a two-RBI single to right field allowing Evan Lorey and Herschberger to score.
  • The Cougars padded their lead in the second inning with an RBI double by Zach Kraabel.
  • The Warriors fought their way back into the game with three runs in the fifth to close the gap to one, 6-5.
  • SAU picked up a huge insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when a sacrifice fly by Mast brought home Josiah Kitchen.
  • Rochester put the pressure on the Cougars in the sixth. With one run already in, the Warriors looked to even the score with the tying run on third base with only one out. However, Herschberger managed to escape the jam with no further damage. Herschberger would slam the door shut in the seventh, retiring the Warriors in order to earn his first save of the season.
  • Miller and Brandon Haynes picked up two hits apiece. Mast and King finished with two RBI's apiece while Kitchen and Herschberger scored two runs each.
  • After giving up the two runs in the first innings, freshman pitcher Alex Stephens settled in and tossed three more scoreless innings while fanning six batters. Herschberger worked three innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and struck out four.
