Baseball defeats MVNU to advance in CL Tournament

UPLAND, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team is moving on in the Crossroads League Tournament after surviving an elimination game on Saturday morning, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene University 4-3.

The Cougars will the loser of the Marian University and Goshen College contest in an elimination game on Monday, May 6 starting at 10 a.m. from Winterholter Field on the campus of Taylor University.

VS. MARIAN

  • Spring Arbor opened tournament play against No. 3-seeded Marian on Friday.
  • Senior pitcher Duncan Patterson turned in another outstanding performance on the mound, giving up just one run over 6.2 innings of work.
  • However, the Cougars' offense was unable to provide any run support as Marian's Matt Burleton tossed a complete game shutout while striking out 11 batters.
  • The Knights scored the lone run of the game in the seventh inning. Eathan Stephen hit a one-out double to left-center and Caden Jones followed with an RBI single to right.
  • Chris Triplett collected two of Spring Arbor's six hits.
  • Gavin Harris added 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

 
 

VS. MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE

  • Spring Arbor and Mount Vernon Nazarene were tied 2-2 after five innings of play, but a two-run sixth inning put SAU ahead for good. Triplett delivered a clutch, two-out base hit to bring home Josiah Kitchen. Then, Evan Lorey doubled to deep left field to drive in Triplett.
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene got one run back in the seventh, but Harris blanked MVNU the rest of the way to keep the Cougars' title hopes alive.
  • Lorey, Duncan Patterson and Peyton Harding recorded two hits apiece.
  • Zachariah Devon got the start on the mound and pitched five innings giving up just two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Harris closed out final four innings to earn his fourth victory of the season.

 
 

UP NEXT

The Cougars will the loser of the Marian University and Goshen College contest in an elimination game on Monday, May 6 starting at 10 a.m. from Winterholter Field on the campus of Taylor University.
