Howard Taylor had a remarkable career as a member of the Cougar men's soccer team. The two-time NAIA All-American accumulated 110 goals and 42 assists over his four years and still stands as the program's all-time leading scorer.

Taylor played a pivotal role on arguably the best team in program history, the 1977 squad, which was inducted into the SAU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. The Cougars were a perfect 19-0 that season and advanced all the way to the NAIA national championship game, before forfeiting the contest due to Spring Arbor's policy of not competing on Sundays.

During that 1977 campaign, Taylor scored 35 goals – good enough for top three in the country – and was named to the NAIA national championship all-tournament team, as well as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American.
